Ugg® Boots: From Sheepskin to Riches!

The popular brand of sheepskin boots known as Uggs has a long and interesting history concerning its rise in the United States. Now sold all across the country in a variety of fashions, the true founder of Ugg® boots, Brian Smith, originally came to the United States almost $1000 in debt. He had nothing except two dozen Ugg® boots to sell and the hope of becoming rich off of these unique sheepskin Ugg® boots. Fortunately, he was able to find some surfers who had already purchased some Uggs from Australia and were sharing with their friends. Although he sold less than 50 pairs of Uggs in his first season, the Ugg® shoe brand quickly took off and has been quite a success story ever since.

Although Ugg® shoes have become very popular in the United States, many people still misspell the brand's name. In fact, the variety of spellings that Ugg® boots have been given is almost as varied as the types of styles Uggs has. Common misspellings include Ug boots, Ugs, and Ugh boots although there are many others. Part of the reason for these misspellings is because a number of other companies have tried to trademark these misspellings for similar products. Since Deckers outdoor bought the “Ugg” brandname, a number of other Australian and American based shoe companies have made “Ug” or “Ugh” boots.

Throughout the 1990s and into the current decade, there have been fierce ongoing legal battles in Australia, the United States, and Europe about the ability to use any of the Ugg® misspellings. In 2006, Australian maker Uggs N Rugs won the legal battle in Australian and had Decker's trademark removed. Decker's outdoor decided not to pursue the issue in a higher court but instead re-focus their efforts threatening legal action against shoe makers in the United States and Europe that use “Ugg” or any misspelling of the word in their shoe products.

Regardless of which way you spell “Ugg” or which shoe maker made them, all Uggs have one thing in common: they are incredibly comfortable in cold weather and that trait will keep your feet warm no matter where you are.
